 JoomlaXplorer is a file management component. It allows you to browse, edit, copy, move, and delete files and categories. It allows you to upload, extract, and change permissions as well. This review highlights the handiness of this component.
Installation.
Installation of this component is straightforward, just like how you would install a typical Joomla component. There's no need to deal with extra configurations. You're ready to use it, right after the installation.
Cannot modify or delete files?
I'm sure most of you have encountered the problem where you cannot delete or modify a file or folder on your web server. In most cases you end up calling your hosting provider to resolve this issue. Some technical savvy users get around this problem by obtaining shell access on their server. In this case, they don't have to wait for their hosting provider to resolve the issue. But for those not so technical savvy users, JoomlaXplorer is pretty handy to solve this kind of problem. JoomlaXplorer can modify the file permission so you can modify or delete it.
Browsing Files.
JoomlaXplorer is quick on displaying all the files and directories. There are good sets of icons that will help you identify its function. The only thing that's missing here is the icon tooltip. Most users would need to click on the icon just to find out what that icon does.
Edit, Copy, Move, and Delete Files.
All I can say is it does the job. And on the later version (1.3.x) a new feauture is added that marks each files and folders if it's writable.
Extract, Upload, and Change File Permission.
These are the most useful features in this component. Most specially the extract and change file permission. With the extract feature, you can upload a compressed file and then just extract it from the web server. Some hosting control panel does not even have the extract function. So you will end up uploading each individual file which will take a lot of time. With the change file permission feature, you can unlock files that you can't normally do using an FTP client or your hosting control panel.
Final Words.
If you don't have shell access to your web server which most users don't, this component is a very good admin tool. It allows you to browse, edit, copy, move, and delete files and categories. It allows you to upload, extract, and change permissions. The bottom line is, it does the job.
