If you've read anything at all about Content Management Systems
(CMS), you'll probably know at least three things: CMS are the most
exciting way to do business, CMS can be really, I mean really, complicated and lastly Portals are absolutely, outrageously, often unaffordably expensive.
Joomla!
is set to change all that ... Joomla! is different from the normal
models for portal software. For a start, it's not complicated. Joomla!
has been developed for the masses. It's licensed under the GNU/GPL
license, easy to install and administer and reliable. Joomla! doesn't
even require the user or administrator of the system to know HTML to
operate it once it's up and running.

Components are Joomla!'s content elements or applications that are usually displayed in the center of the main content area of a template. This depends on the design of the template in use. Components are core elements of Joomla!'s functionality. These core elements include Banners, Contact, News Feeds, Polls and Web Links. Members of the Joomla! community produce third party Joomla! components on a continuous basis. You can download some of the free components from http://www.joomlahacks.com/joomla/components/0,0,0,0,5,0,6/

Modules extend the capabilities of Joomla! by giving it new functionality. Modules are small content items that can be displayed anywhere depending on the template design. Modules are very easy to install using the Joomla! administrator. Joomla! modules may include: Main Menu, Top menu, Template Chooser, Polls, Newsflash, Hit Counter, etc. Members of the Joomla! Community produce Joomla! modules on a continuous basis. Some of the free Joomla! modules can be downloaded from http://www.joomlahacks.com/joomla/modules/0,0,0,0,5,0,7/.

Joomla templates make it easy to change the look and feel of a Joomla! website. There are two types of Joomla templates, the site (frontend) template and the admin template. The Joomla! site template is easy to develop by just following the Joomla! template framework. The mosMainBody() is the main function that outputs the component data. The mosLoadModules() function outputs the Joomla! module data that was assigned to it. For example, mosLoadModules('banner') will output module data that was assinged to the banner module position. Other typical positions are left, right, footer, and header. Joomla! templates are freely available for download from http://www.joomlahacks.com/joomla/templates/0,0,0,0,6,0,8/.

A Mambot is a small, task-oriented function for Joomla! software. Joomla! mambot intercepts content and manipulates it in some way before it's displayed. Joomla! provides a number of Mambots in the core distribution. Some examples are such are WYSIWYG editors, 3rd party component and module searchers, etc. Joomla! mambots are freely available for download from http://www.joomlahacks.com/joomla/mambots/0,0,0,0,5,0,9/.

This article is for those new to Joomla and SMF. If you already have either Joomla or SMF installed, just install the other software on the same database. Remember if you use the Fantastico installer from CPANEL, it installs the software on seperate database. Don't use Fantastico, you need to do the setup and configuration manually.
