Now this is a problem, you should have waited for any word from the Joomla-SMF author before you upgrade.
Maybe the patch failed or something else.... If you have access to the old patched Joomla index.php, you might just want to open that and manually apply that on the new Joomla index.php.
You possibly changed something in your setup by not properly unpatching/patching appropriatly.
I installed Joomla 1.04 after seeing your comments and installed SMF & Bridge but did not experience an issue with login in
You were right to upgrade to 1.04 though as there was a hack of a senior members template demo site (though I wonder what the hell some dumbass script kiddes claim of accomplishment can be to hack a template Demo site-why the hell they don't go f*k with CIA or FBI websites to occupy their busy little fingers)
(just my rant, I'll shut up now! )
But yeah, just methodically undo what you did and then step into it again.
P.S. (I may have had the advantage of working on a virgin install)
I have restored my site to 1.03 and then patched it all over again with the same result. Any other idea's? It's only my test site, so it's not really a big deal to me. I would, however, like to to do my main site since this is a security patch.
If you can set up a local (on your personal hard drive) installation of Joomla with JoomlaStarterKit or JSAS (joomla standalone server) {Cowboy, please host these fine tools! ) do so then run PHPINFO from the main menu ( of joomlaStarterKit)
Carefully check your PHP and global variable settings.
If you reloaded 1.03 and you still have probs, it has to be PHP settings or issues with your database (MySQL) since all the other stuff would have been overwritten.
Try loading a template or something ( guessing maybe a css file got overwritten or something?) sometimes my ftp program gets confused and uploads as binary vs ascii sometimes (or maybe I was the confused one)
Those RHUK templates have acted real weird sometimes, again try another template.
OK, so I went back to 1.0.3, uninstalled SMF and SMF Login, applied the patch to 1.0.4, reinstalled SMF and SMF Login, and all is back to normal. Must have been a glitch somewhere, but H E double hocky sticks if I know where. Thank god for backups.
Aloha this is my first patch- working w/ 1.03 - so please give a newbie so help --
How would I go about installing this -- I read that index.php needs to uninstalled then installed. If someone could give a quick walk through I would greatly appreciate it I have the latest SMF-Joomala brindge and log-in mod as well.
if you go to the SMF bridge admin screen you should see an unpatch button
that removes the changes that took place to make it 'patched'
after you upgrade, you click on patch again which reapplies the changes.
P.S. Ideally, when a thread has been succesfully answered/closed you start a NEW THREAD if you are asking a question not exactly related to the issue. (another good although rare thing is to search/read the forums!
True - i did not make it up! (not all of it anyway!)

@John Stock If installing/uninstalling was all you did/redid it must have been an oversight with the patching/unpatching routine when you upgraded. That makes sense since the Bridge modifies the login routines so that it can 'tell' the two apps about the login status of the other.
Just goes to show you can't be too careful! ( I can't tell how many times I've seen a squirrel in the road in my rear view mirror, much flatter than he was 5 minutes ago! )
I think I had more wrong with my site than just permissions and patched files. I have since dumped my Mandrake 9 server in favour of SME 7. Things seem to be working much better now. Thanks for you help jj.
