Changing the default user level to "Author" on registration?

Hey Guys,
I just came across another hickup Undecided

and am wondering if there is anyone that can shed some light on the situation

I need to change the default user access level to "author" so that i can use xhtmlsuite. I found the below article on how to do this with the other SMF bridge (the one that uses the SMF registration component)...

Any ideas on how this can be achieved? I am using the standard Mambo Registration, if that helps..
