Username versus Real Name

I've looked all over in both Joomla and SMF and I can't find a spot where to specify which I want to use. Currently the site and forum are displaying "Real Names" I would rather it show the Username as some people may not be so keen on displaying their real names online.

Where do I change that at?

side note: I know each member can go in and change their display name to their username, but is there a way to set that as the default behavior?

I need this too. When searching on the SMF forum, i came over this little query to do in phpmyadmin:

UPDATE smf_members
SET realName = memberName;

It seemed to work fine at the time, but i found out I have to do this everytime a new member register. Guess it has something to do with the fact that it is Mambo thats handling the member database.
If anyone has an answer to this, id be very thankfull. Members in general probably dont care much for displaying their real name on every thread they are posting in.

Anyone have an update? This is something I am desperately seeking a workaround for... I can't help but believe that forcing people to display their real name is a huge turn-off for a lot of people who register.

It seems like such a simple thing that must have been addressed 1000s of times, surely we don't require each user to go into their profile and change the box with their real name to show the same information as their username. There MUST[/i] be a better way.

If you use 'SMF registration' in the joomlahacks bridge component settings, the username will be displayed. This is because during smf registration the user is only given the option of providing a username. However this username is duplicated to the real name field in the joomla dbase. Does this make sense?

No, this didnt work at all for me. When i try registering from the Mambo register site, i still have to put in a name, and when posting in the forum, the real name is still displayed.

Did i do something wrong?

Edit: Looks like it works when i first enter the forum and then register from there, though.

I think something must be wrong with your setup as on my set up it takes you to the smf registration page, even if you click the register link in the login module on the front page. I am using the optional joomla hacks login module, don't know if this makes a difference. You can see mine in action at http://www.dmxcomputers.co.uk
