Trying to migrate from Joomla 1.5.12 to Joomla 1.7 via upgrade to Joomla 1.5.19+

My site is running Joomla 1.5.12. Due to a PHP upgrade on our host's server, I need to migrate to Joomla 1.7 but I cannot do this in one step because I first need to be running Joomla 1.5.19+ (which includes Mootools 1.4.2) before jUpdate will do the job. I have the file "Joomla_1.5.12_to_1.5.19-Stable-Patch_Package.zip" but I have no idea what to do with it. It's just hundreds of files with no directory structure and no obvious installation utility.

I'm out of my depth here. I would be grateful for any help. I just need the minimum necessary 1.5.x upgrade before jUpdate can do the rest of the job.

Simply unzip the zip file (the patch you have) into your root Joomla directory.  Although this is a VERY simple thing to do, ALWAYS back up your current site before making sweeping changes like this - even very simple ones.
