Problems with german umlauts
« on: October 04, 2005, 07:01:55 AM »

Hi,

i have installed the Joomla-SMF component

- Joomla 1.0.2
- SMF
- Joomla-SMF 1.0.1

See the standalone forum here: http://www.4ai.at/smf/index.php
The wrapped forum: http://4ai.at/joomla/index.php?option=com_smf&Itemid=5

As you can see, the german umlauts are not displayed.

How can I fix this?

It seems that the problem is only with data from the Mysql-DB..

I solved the problem: I had to change the charset in the joomla language file.

Bevor it was
Code:
DEFINE('_ISO','charset=utf-8');
now it's
Code:
DEFINE('_ISO','charset=ISO-8859-1');
and it works perfect.

Please tell me if it was a quick and dirty way and if I can do this more elegant (I don't know if there can be any negative effects in feature with this charset).

My "trick" made it even worse. If i switch the charset to ISO-8859-1, the backend configuration of Joomla-SMF isn't working. If i switch back to UTF-8, the backend is working fine, but the umlauts are not correctly displayed.

What shall I do?

Hello cowboy,

Umlaute are additinal alphabetically letters that only exist in german alphabet. They are not displayed on english keyboards and sadly not shown for OS configured with english language defaults.

To be able to show you an exmaple of german Umlaute IŽd attached a small jpeg.

Yes, with both (SMF, Joomla) standalone it worked very well. After changing the charset, it is working.

But I don't know if it is the "correct" way of fixing this error.

I just wanted to add that version 1.0.1b of the Joomla-SMF component is working with ISO-8859-1 (backend too).

I switched the Joomla charset back to UTF-8, because a few components were not working with ISO-8859-1.

Now I ask you: Are there any differences with charsets on database level? I don't have another explanation...
