SEF not working.. is this .htaccess problem.
« on: July 27, 2007, 09:18:44 AM »

Hi..

I have searched the forums and tried a variety of configurations in the .htaccess file, but each time I switch on SEF url's, I get this message..

The requested URL /content/section/1/2/ was not found on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

I don't have any third party SEO's installed as far as I know..

Here is the basic content of my .htaccess file..
(I have stripped out commented lines just for this posting)

ErrorDocument 404 /error/404page.html

The hosting company told me to insert that last line, as any invalid link was going to one of their default pages...

Does anyone have any ideas on where I am going wrong?

Today I met exactly the same problem after I migrated my Joomla 1.0.x website to a new server.

If I trun SEF off at backend, then the frontend pages can be opened without problem.

But, my website had been running well with SEF enabled on my former server.

Could anyone give some hint what is the matter and how to fix this?

Thanks.

Hi again Baijianpeng,

First of all check if mod_rewrite is enabled in your server. Second, remove all non-sef related stuff from your .htaccess.
If you use the same .htaccess as Derek, I would suggest to change the next settings:
Code:
Options +FollowSymLinks
and
Code:
# RewriteBase /

If that doesn't work, pleas post your .htaccess here

Hi locutus , Thanks for your help.

I reported this issue to my hosting provider, they made a test: install a fresh J1.5 in another web account and enabled core SEF for it, then they noticed that the J1.5 will show the same problem: all frontend pages except frontpage will not be opened.

Then, they realized that this is NOT a bug in Joomla, but something wrong in their server (FreeBSD v8).

Then, they checked again and fixed it.

Now, my Joomla 1.0.x website runs smoothly with core SEF on.

Thank you.
