recent topics modification

Is there any way of having the joomla recent topics module pull from a forum i have located on another site ? What file(s) would i have to modify so it connects to another database/site to do this ?

so if example1.com has joomla and example2.com has smf, how can i get smf recent topics to work on examplea.com to pull data from exampleb.com

The simplest way to do that is to creat a rss feed from your forum and a module for interpreting that feed. There are lots of modules who can do that for you.
