Installation Help!

Greetings,
I'm working on a school project for Madonna University and we have used Joomla to develop a web page portal to allow non profit organizations the ability to communicate.

I am trying to install a forum component and stumbled across SMF. From what I read it sounds compatible with Joomla. So I figure I would give it a try.

I've downloaded the manual and read through the installation process.

Here's what I've done.
downloaded the smf_1-1-4_install.zip to my computer desktop at work.
Logged into my Joomla site as an administrator
Went to Installers/components
Browsed for the smf_1-1-4_install.zip folder on my local PC
Selected Upload and Install from within Joomla
Received error "Failed to move/upload file to following directory /media.

I'm thinking it may have missed a step somewhere. Do I need to Create a directory on my Joomla Sever and FTP the files to it or should i just be able to upload the .zip file from the installers/components page? Please advise.
