merged old DB into new wrapped forum, now usernames cannot sync

I have a new forum that's wrapped and it was working fine.  I took a DB from an existing stand alone forum and used it in the new forum.  The forums were identical in files - I just wanted the posts and usernames.  Everything went fine - I reinstalled the bridge and patched the files, but I get this error on syncing:

Joomla/Mambo[0] / SMF[0] inserted Failed

I checked the new DB and all the members are present in both the jos_users and smf_members fields.  I can log into the forum if i used it unwrapped, but if it's wrapped I get taken to a non-existent blank page. 

Anyone know what to do?

ok, i fixed this  - i had to delete everyone from my jos_users column and then do the patch which imported all of the smf users into the jos_users which is what i wanted

new problem - no one can log into the site using joomla - there are no passwords in the Joomla user database. Huh
