OK I am trying to install the bridge because I would really really like to have that on my site.  However I see that smf and joomla must be installed on the same database?  Is there any way around that?  I mean I guess I could uninstall joomla and reinstall to make sure they are on the same database but would rather not.

They have to be in the same database. You can import the SMF database into the Joomla one. This has been explained several times on the forums
