I'm new to this, but it is my understanding that you have to log in through joomla.  There was an install guide that says something about this.  I'm thinking of directing my register button in smf & the login button to the main joomla login page.  I may remove the login fields as well when I get a chance to figure out where they are. 

In short, just force people to login through joomla.
