first time installation questions not addressed in documentation
« on: August 12, 2007, 02:12:27 PM »

I'm an experienced software developer with a fair amount of web development experience but this is my first time setting up a Joomla/SMF website.  I'm trying to follow the JSMF documentation but I have some questions that aren't covered in the documentation.

1. wrapped vs unwrapped - this isn't really explained very well.  I assume that when referring to SMF being "wrapped" in Joomla, SMF is an actual page within the joomla site, something akin to old school html frames.  Is wrapped the "preferred" installation.  i.e. the one that will cause me the least problems maintaining?

2. I've seen sites that use http://forums.mydomain.com (a subdomain)  and others that use http://www.mydomain.com/forums.  Is there any pro or con to setting up SMF one way or the other as far as JSMF is concerned?  Does the wrapped/unwrapped thing figure into this at all?

3. Assuming I use joomla 1.0.13, SMF 1.1.3, CB 1.1, and JSMF 2.0.2.x, are there any serious issues that I should watch out for from an installation or maintenance standpoint?  I understand that there are a lot of ways to install and configure everything, but I want to set it up in whichever way will avoid the most problems in the future.

1)   One of the things you have tot think one is that when you use SMF in Wrapped mode that both Style Sheets are loaded. The J! and the SMF Style Sheets (so as you said as developer you will now what this can cause, duplicate ID’s)
2)   Install the forum in a directory in the root not a sub domain. Example Joomla.org is using no bridge. The installed the forum on a sub domain and maid the templates all look the same. This is the reason that most people think the use a Bridge.
3)   Please search the forums for this one. Then you will find a lot of answers.

I forgot a more important question...

Where can I download JSMF_2_0_2_unzip1st.zip ?

All of the links in the download section on this site are for just the component by itself...

com_smf_2_0_2.zip

...and don't include the community builder plugin and the joomap plugin mentioned in the documentation.
