Urgent: Joomla-SMF bridge may be illegal.
« on: August 02, 2007, 12:44:37 PM »

To whom it may concern.

Please check the Joomla legal forums:

http://forum.joomla.org/index.php/topic,197480.0.html

We are currently having a discussion about the Joomla-SMF bridge and would welcome technical advice from the author of the bridge.

My last post was removed from that thread due to being offtopic. This is waht it contained:

Quote
I have taken a quick look at the code and from this I feel that this bridge is illegal. If you check the file:

smf.class.php you will see that many of the class member functions are triggered from the SMF code base (well this is what the comments imply) :

for example (there are many of these):

Quote
/**
 * This function is triggered from SMF on logout
 *
 *

If these functions are indeed called from SMF it's self then it means that GPL functions are being utilised directly in a non-gpl application. This is illegal.

Disclaimer: Like I have said, I have only gone over the code quickly and I have made my assumption based on what is implied from the comments. I may be wrong.

BTW I have posted in the Joomlahacks forum about this thread and I hope to see some technical feedback here soon.

I am not sure how it was offtopic, but I would suggest that someone such as yourself who has invested so much time in the Joomla platform should think very carefully about the people who you are dealing with at Joomla.

I would like to invite you to the JCD-A forums for further discussion on your bridge. This is due to the fact that the Joomla forums are now controlled by rouge elements and your comments are likely to be deleted.

Sorry that was a bit harsh, but the post I was talking about has been closed now anyway...

Kinda reminds me of mambo a few years back....

those function are directly called from SMF integration callbacks ...they primarily interact with the database and could be rewritten to use the SMF database handles.

It would be a shame if SMF support is removed.

actually, after reading what you wrote in the other forum, it SMF that invokes GPL code not the other way around.

Wolverine,

Nice to meet you Smiley

Please take a look at this message and the posts that come after:

http://jcd-a.org/component/option,com_smf/Itemid,28/topic,349.msg4411/#msg4411

From looking at this I now believe that your bridge is legal - as long as you are not cut and pasting code directly from one IP to another I feel you are ok. There is no problem on calling external functions as this is made allowable in the GPL. Anyway check out the post to see if you are covered - i took a quick look at your code and I believe that it is ok, but only the parent really knows their baby Wink

Anyway please feel welcome to air your views at the JCDA, we are here to help 3PD developers protect their rights.
