I just want to tell everyone that I will be continuing development of the JSMF component as Wolverine takes a break. Some of you might not know me, but I started JSMF way back from the Mambo times, and of course it was called Mambo-SMF. I was doing development until JSMF version 1.2 when Wolverine picked it up.
I'll try my best to give support. But please bare with me.

This is a tough time for Joomla. And your bridge is one component that so many of us rely on. I've been through the Mambo/Joomla transition, and I am very apprehensive on how this will end up. So many developers have already walked away, and many others are threatening to. Again, thanks.
Cowboy- it's comforting to know this project won't be dropped. I'm new to the whole SMF/Joomla bridge world and I hope that this project does continue as it seems very valuable.
Here's to your efforts and I hope that you are able to keep this going.

I, personally, am completely fed up with this st$p$d licensing debate. The JoomlaHacks SMF Bridge is licensed under a GNU-GPL License and thus, we aren't directly effected by this move. I think we should be safe from the Joomla side. I've read over the SMF license, and it didn't immediately look like we were breaking their license either.
Unless bridging the products consists of a derivative work, we should be safe. The FSF looks like they're saying it is... Ugh...

There are definitely shared function calls and data structures between Joomla and SMF via the bridge, and therefore the bridge still violates the GPL by including a non-GPL element in the workflow.
It is even worst than you think because here we are talking only about free and open source stuff on all sides. THe point made by FSF lawyers in the SMF post I linked too was that if there is a GPL script, and you use a bridge to link it to something else, then the bridge itself becomes GPL (just like nowadays Joomla components have to be GPL), but equally the "target" script, in that case SMF, becomes GPL as well. Because SMF is not licensed under the GPL (and won't be), then there is a problem somewhere, and my (non-lawyer) conclusion was that there is a problem in releasing any bridge linking Joomla to anything else that is not GPL. So I raised the issue...

It doesn't matter what other lawyers think - only what the FSF and the Joomla developers think.
Certainly not so. They explain what they think and take a position. If your lawyer has a different opinion, and you trust him, then you do as you like, distribute what you like, then Joomla OSM will/may sue you and then a court will decide. That was a large part of the initial discussion actually : only acourts can decide the matter, and there has never been a court decision on this matter. Then again, if there was any, what validity will it have depending on where you live, etc No one wants to go that far, but this issues basically jumps back into our face today with the 1.1.13 compatibilty issues...
Think it is very clear now there is a official statement on the Joomla.org boards and Simplemachines boards. Simplemachines has this discussion all ready had for a few weeks even months with Joomla and FSF.
Joomla! is very clear in this one the Bridge between Joomla! and SMF is violating the licence code. So we all have to respect that. When you have program skills you can make your own Bridge but you can not distribute it!! Why distribution of the bridge is violating the licence of Joomla!
At this moment I’m looking for an alternative for the future. Testing with Mambo and it looks very good.
