Having spent the whole day doing successful installs as reported by the config screen only to have it not work, i.e. not share login data, it occured to me that maybe this extension does not work until a key is added -is this the case before I use any more time getting it to share data?

No the key isn't needed.
It should work fine and is designed to do this without the key in place. That's just there to support the jh project and allow them to make a better bridge.
I can't say what your problem this, although I am sure the key has nothing to do with it. ~Joey
