404 error with double url

WHen i login, or any other member does for that matter, they are greeted with a 404 error and the addy shows a double url.

I've spent a couple hours scouring the net for the fix and am unable to find it. most of what i've seen target SEF, but i have that disabled. I have the latest versions of smf, the bridge as well as joomla.

I've tried getting rid of the htaccess file that set register_globals off, but that did nothing. I've also encountered a fix for a different version of joomla, but its for the default login module, rather than the community builder

What i've noticed to work was when i deleted my cookies, it would log me in problem free

fixed it, opened up mod_cblogin.php
under
if (!(strncmp($request_uri, "http:", 5)==0) && !(strncmp($request_uri, "https:", 6)==0)) {

i commented out the following

   // $return = "http".((isset($_SERVER['HTTPS']) && ( !empty( $_SERVER['HTTPS'] ) ) && ($_SERVER['HTTPS'] != 'off') )?"s":"")
   //      ."://".mosGetParam( $_SERVER, 'HTTP_HOST', null ).((strpos($request_uri, '/') !== 0) ? "/":"").$request_uri;

and then added the same as the else here

$return = $request_uri;

} else {
   $return = $request_uri;
}
