Challenge for Joomla! mod/component writers :)
« on: March 08, 2007, 05:52:41 AM »

I've been using Joomla! for quite a while now and I'm currently in the process of designing a new website for my online gaming clan.

So far Joomla! modules have provided me with all the tools I needed to make a good clansite (forums(SMF bridge), news, shoutbox, guestbook, links, etc.)

except for 1:

A good warmanagement component.

I know there are components out that claim to be warmanagement components, but they're either not complete enough, buggy, outdated or the development has stopped (vWar bridge, CWC component). The vWar bridge is nice, but it's still vWar and I'd like something that only uses Joomla! because vWar is still very vulnerable to hacks and the bridge doesn't do it all.
I also know there's a new tool in development, but it will be made for Joomla! 1.5, which doesn't help us Joomla 1.0x users much...

So by this post I'd like to challenge all of you elite Wink Joomla! programmers to create a component that gamers are looking for and help to push more clansites towards Joomla!

These are the basics that a good clanwar component in my opinion should have (I'll show examples out of our current vWar site to show what I mean):

1. Create different teams out of your Joomla! members that you can show in a list on your page (like a Counterstrike squad, an Unreal Tournament squad etc.).

It would be good to add custom fields to this list to show game GUIDS (like SteamID)(admin rights needed for entering, public can view the list).

2. Create a list of (admin rights needed):
  • leagues (like clanbase, with http link to the league site)
  • games (like call of duty, with small icon of the game)
  • games (like call of duty, with small icon of the game)
  • gametypes (like deathmatch, capture the flag etc.)
  • opponents (with short name (clantag), full name, http link, irc channel and contact information)
  • maps (like de_dust2, with image of the map)
  • servers (to pick a server from)

This info should be stored in the database, so if you play an opponent again you just have to pick them from a drop-down list.

3. The ability to add matches (frontend preferred, admin rights needed) in which you pick:
  • game
  • league
  • gametype
  • map(s)
  • opponent (if the opponent is new you should be able to enter the information manually and this should be stored in the database)
  • server
  • date&time
  • number of players needed per team

When this match is added a mass-mail should go out to all members of the squad that play that game to tell them a new match was added to the site.

4. When a match is finished you can enter the scores for each map that was played and the final score. You also need to be able to write a report about the match. An ability to upload screenshots would be welcome as well.

5. Show a list of played matches on the site with game, league, opponent, score. You should be able to see the details of the match (like maps, report etc.).

This info can be public.

6. Show a list of upcoming matches on the site, where members that are in the squad that plays that game are able to sign up for the match (yes/maybe/no). It would be nice to fit this into a module so you can place it anywhere. This info can be public, but only squadmembers can sign up. A calendar view would be nice too.

7. Only people that are in a squad should be able to sign up for matches! Our site will have loads of members when I've bridged it with SMF, and most of them aint members of our clan and therefor shouldn't be able to sign up for matches.

I think the best way to create this is to base it on some sort of calendar/events component. Unfortunately I'm not a programmer and cannot do this myself. I really hope someone is willing to put time into this because I've looked everywhere for a good warmanagement component and only found people that had the same problems with the same existing tools, asking for a better component...
I'd even consider paying (a little Wink) for it if the component does what it needs to do...

Thanks in advance!

Regards,

Jeroen (a.k.a. [OAP]Lag)

P.S. If there already is a component that can do all this (and it aint CWC or vWar bridge), please let me know!!!

No,

Vwar is the best, period!

There are several CMS (Clan Management Systems..lol) that are still starting up but none of them come close...

Vwar has almost frozen in terms of development so I guess a full clone and port like PHPnuke clans did would be a welcome addition. If anyone can code php Knock yourself out....You would need to ask the Vwar team first though..

But I dare say that Buster would mostly welcome the input...

Imagine Vwar as a fully installable Component with CB members management and
the like...
