char encoding problem

Hello

I am having some trouble with Joomla-SMF v 2.0
when you click on the menu pointing at the forum it does transfer you to the page requested but the text/links it translates (from forum links to joomla links) are coming all wrong (gibberish). the encoding on all (joomla, smf, and batabase) is UTF-8 and the versions I can see in the about section of the component are:
Version Information:
Your Joomla version is: 1.0.11
Your SMF version is: 1.1 RC2
Your Joomla-SMF version: 2.0

any thoughts?

Turn off gzip compression on smf admin panel... should work hust fine if you want the compression use it from joomla admin! says so on the user guide Cheesy
