Need a Guide for moving my site
« on: February 09, 2007, 12:29:16 PM »

I am planning on moving my site to a new webhost.

I currently have Joomla, CB and SMF using the JMSF bridge.

Can somebody explain to me (or link me to), what the steps are to successfully move my site so I don't lose the information that is already there.
I think I would start by downloading my current site off my current ftp and upload it to the new ftp, but I am not even sure about that.

Thanks

here you can find te info for Joomla!
http://forum.joomla.org/index.php/topic,5556.0.html
http://help.joomla.org/

Here you can find the info for SMF
http://docs.simplemachines.org/index.php?topic=489.msg706#msg706
http://docs.simplemachines.org

First unpatch the Bridge when you move Joomla! and SMF just install the Bridge and your done.

So I move Joomla and SMF separately and than re-apply the JSMF bridge when they are both set up on the new host?

By unpatching the bridge, do u mean uninstall? And if so, do I uninstall it before I make the move? I was hoping I could make a mirror image of my site and when it is ready I could just move the domain over so there is no interruption, since it will take me a few days to do all this.

You can not make a image off the site Please read the documentation. I gave you. There you will read how to move an SMF and Joomla! site.

About the Bridge first unpatch it and then unistall it.

When Joomla! and SMF ar running on the new server without problems you can install the Bridge.

Well this is all over my head, perhaps I should pass on it. I can't even figure out how to unpatch the bridge.

Just read the Links and the User Guide off JSMF. Every thing is writen in these documents

Extra Tip: Install an WAMP or XAMP server local on your PC and Play with it. @ this way you can learn how bacuping and so on works. Search with google on WAMP or XAMP.

Hi Livebox,
Today I will try to move the site to the other host.
I un-patched the SMF Source File and all went well.
I un-patched the Joomla Source files and my site stopped working.
Am I suppose to only un-patch the SMF Source Files?
I haven't un-installed the component yet, just in case. I re-patched the Joomla Source files and the site is back.

Before I go do something that isn't reversible I thought I better ask.
I've read the user guide but can't find anything on un-installing the bridge.

Also, you mention uploading SMF and Joomla separately, but they share the same database, how do I separate that or do I?

Appreciate the help

Tom

edit: I removed the login module, to see if that was causing the problem, and got this error message
Quote
Fatal error: Undefined class name 'jsmffrontend' in /mnt/w0302/d26/s30/b028eecf/www/gamerztheatre.com/modules/mod_smf_whosonline.php on line 48

Should I just continue and uninstall the component through the normal Joomala>Installers>Components>Uninstall method.

Joomla! and SMF need to share the same database.

Before moving the site un-patch the Bridge and uninstall it also uninstall all Modules off the Bridge.

Then move the site to the new host. Before you install the JSMF you have to check if Joomla! And SMF are working standalone. When everything is working then you can install the Bridge and the Modules. This is the simple way to do this Wink

Got it done Smiley

Here are the steps I took, in case anybody else is looking for a guide.
1.   Export database to desktop structure and data save as file (a just in case back up)
2.   Download site files off ftp to desktop (a just in case back up)
3.   Uninstalled modules related the JSMF
4.   Uninstall CB SMF plugins
5.   Uninstall Discussbot Plug in
6.   Control Panel Components>Joomla-SMF Forum>Install>Unpatched SMF Source File
7.   Control Panel Components>Joomla-SMF Forum>Install>Unpatched Joomla Source Files
8.   Uninstalled component - control panel>Installers>Component>Uninstall
9.   Export database ‘Structure and Data’ save as file
10.   Download site files off ftp to desktop for new site.
11.   Upload site and database to new ftp.
12.   Installed database
13.   Made adjustments in the root configuration.php file so everything is pointing to the right url and database
14.   IMPORTANT: SMF wasn’t working but I found http://docs.simplemachines.org/index.php?topic=663 which fixed all the settings
15.   Installed JSMF component.
16.   Installed SMF CB login, and modules

Thanks for the help Livebox  Smiley
