What should I do to fastrack my Joomla skill in as little time as poss??
« on: January 08, 2007, 04:44:25 PM »

Hi.

I was wondering what the experts would do to maximize there learning experience in the shortest possible time if they had there time again as a total newb. I am interested in eventually designing Joomla web site's for a living.
I currently work as an I.T technician but am looking to move away from this into Web Design

I am guessing I would need to have a good knowledge of Macromedia Fireworks (or similar) to seriously edit templates and naturally I know I would need to be very familiar with Joomla.

Would learning PHP or HTTP be adventitious?

Anything else?

I would like to know apart from experience exactly what I need to learn. I do not want to waste any time on the wrong course like I have done many times before.

I am aware that I can't achieve this in a day and have no intentions of trying too so I am far from trying to belittle just how big a task this will be. Im more looking for a direction by those who have been there and done that.
I would like to make a start right now as I have fallen in Love with Joomla after our introduction only a week ago. Until now I have used Frontpage or sub contracted the more difficult sites out yet here I am making a superb site with Joomla and have far exceeded what I have achieved with Frontpage in years in a matter of days.

So, what do you recommend would be most beneficial too me to make the best Joomla sites I can in time.

First equip yourself.

 1. get the Crimson Editor ( a tabbed super duper notepad!)

 2. Get a cheap web host to play with (1and 1 has packages for as little as $1.50/month- as professional hosts, they arent much good, but good enough for what you will be doing)

3. Find a good forum with people you can bounce ideas off of. Here is probably the best site I've found, and I've seen many. The joomla site itself I've found you hardly get much answered or done, but those guys are ultra busy anyway.

4.Get a local webserver.. search for JSAS or JoomlaStarterKit.
(This allows you to run locally, on your little PC, your own website without even connecting to the internet!) Indeed, if you have two computers in your house networked, you could connect to your local site just like the big boys!

5. Get Firefox. Download all the development tools I recommend which are:
0 WEBDEVELOPER
1. MeasureIt
2.ColorZilla
3. NoScript
4. Adblock
5. ViewInIE Tab
6. View In Opera (operaview)
7. Screen Resizer

Get copies of the browsers
1e6
Ie7
FF2.0
Opera
NetscapeNavigator (just for kicks) <--ensure u have compatability with the 1st 3.

BOOKMARKS
http://www.joomlahacks.com <-Knowledge from friends is power
http://www.joomla24.com/ <--tons of free templates
www.php.net (download the CHM or HTML version of the manual so you can have it on your laptop)

get ready, and get going! Cheesy
