After Installation the website failed to load?
« on: January 06, 2007, 04:54:09 PM »

I've got SMF working standalone and accessed using a wrapper in this website
http://www.didcottownfc.com
it all works fine.
I installed com_smf_2_0.zip OK and did the installation.
I created an item for the menu Forum and when I clicked on it, I ghot the website Header and footer but no Forum.
So I returned to the installation in Components and noticed I had to press two patch links. I did this and when I then reclicked on Forum the website failed to load

I had to uninstall the component.
My client is dissapointed as he wants the Forum to appear the same as on the Rockettheme website.
Can you please help me sort this out?
regards

ok, and?  Blank screens are covered.  Blank screens don't just happen for no reason.  It is a php fatal error and will either be displayed to the screen by enabling maximum error reporting OR it will be written to the php error_log.  And did you check both?  If you did I can almost guarantee you will find the error, then you can post it and I can tell you what is wrong.

I spent a couple of hours with Marcus a guy from Holland. We finally established that it is because Magic Quotes is OFF. I am on shared hosting with Pipex WebFusion and am unable to turn it on. Also I have no access to an error log.
Anyway it all worked until i pressed the click to patch the index file. After that the site faied to load. I think it needs testing before its let loose on the world.
Meantime I got a guy to install the SMF bridge. But that wasn't totally satisfactory either. So I've unpublished it all and left the Forum in a wrapper. It works fine.

have you tried the htaccess php flag?
Code:
php_flag magic_quotes_gpc on

Or simply use ini_set in your joomla index?
Code:
ini_set('magic_quotes_gpc', 1);

Both of which can set magic_quotes at runtime and would have solved your problem.

And I do not agree with your testing statement, when it works for 5000 but not for 1, should I then say it doesn't work for any?  The bridge has been thoroughly tested.  Additionally, for optimal security joomla recommends  php magic_quotes_gpc to be enabled which is stated both in Joomla Admin and in the Joomla Installation with a big red off next to the setting.  Therefore it is assumed everyone is following the optimal security settings.  Shall I develop to be insecure?

I think your comment is way off base.

Whats your name?
I can't call you Wolverine, thats childish, I'm 54!
Don't get cross, my comments weren't meant to stab you. You must remember that this past weekend was incredibly frustrating trying to get something to work and sitting in front of a screen hoping someone would help.
Your competitor's bridge is installed and it works but was not at all satisfied so I unpublished it.
Rockettheme use your bridge and I want to as well. Thing is as I've already said Pipex WebFusion shared hosting has Magic Quotes OFF as standard and I cannot change this. Are you saying I will be able to use the JSMF bridge?
I'm getting a template from Rockettheme with an SMF template that matches so I've got to get your bridge to work.
One question, will you be developing a bridge for when Joomla gets upgraded to 1.5?
I would appreciate an action plan for me to get the bridge functioning
thanks for your help
