The "other" bridge :: No Joomla 1.5 bridge possible says Orstio
« on: January 02, 2007, 12:31:57 PM »

Hello,

I'm in the market for a bridge so I've been studying the options out there.  JSMF2.0 is on fire with the attention that Wolverine et al lavish on it...

I noticed on the SMF site a post where it was suggested that Joomla 1.5 developments prevented further development of Orstio's bridge and that he was going to focus on Mambo moving on (as far as new CMS versions).

Are we headed down the same river?  I do not know what the technical specifics are which make the two incompatible but hope fully the powers that be, do?

My apologies if this has already been raised in the last few days...

The topic has not been raised but right now I am not working on a J! 1.5 bridge either.  Orstio is limited in that he won't patch any core files which is an admirable goal although I think a bit restrictive.  He makes mention that JSMF is not a proper bridge because we make modifications to core files... although our modifications are not significant.  Thats his opinion and he is entitled to it although I think its crazy to think these two pieces of software can successfully be bridged and integrated without at least a few modifications.  And that is my opinion, and that is why JSMF has been doing better recently, imho.

At this point I don't know if I will be able to bridge it or not but considering beta2 isn't even available let alone RC1 and/or RC2 if they go that far, I'm in no rush to try let alone throw in the towel as saying it is impossible.

Sounds like to me Orstio doesn't want to have two code bases.
1.5 is a ways off yet.

I would stick with Joomla and even more of a reason to stay with Wolverine's bridge.

I agree, perhaps!

But why even consider it "two code bases" J1.5 is as different from regular Joomla, as regular Joomla is from PostNuke or Drupal (I'm talking about internal authentications and other stuff)

So it's not even a question of making changes to two code bases that are very similar to cause confusion (but different enough to cause mistakes Tongue)

I remember there was a big hullabaloo from the makers of Facile Forms, about how "the new 1.5 was the death of their code" and within 1hrs the Joomla people were able to demonstrate FF working within Joomla 1.5.

The only other noteworthy thing I remember about the Orsitio bridge was the File Inclusion error that led to a bunch of installations being hacked.

I started working on J! 1.5 integration this week.  I will be starting a new code base and will merge some of the main sections of code in as they are needed.  I will be focusing on rewriting the bridge(again) to fit the J! 1.5 model.

My first impression, not knowing any more than I do about Orstio's problem, is that it may not affect JSMF because of the way we handle the redirectexit calls in SMF already.  I have always been more on the Joomla side of things and more willing to come up with a solution even if it means small amounts of code modification.  So without knowing more, I am not worried at this point.  And again, there is no rush as I don't see J!1.5 being stable for quite some time.  But the integration has been started.

Just wanted to note that Jinx and Louis did finally post a solution to Orstio's problem once he finally got around to stating what his particular problem with the 1.5 system was.

I don't know if that will help the JHacks project at all since you have been more willing to make changes needed for a better implementation.

If you go to the last page of the thread on J! you might find some tricks included in the way J! 1.5 now works that will make your job much easier.

Thanks for the info.

And I just want to say, there is no such thing as "IMPOSSIBLE" in programming. There is always a way. The only challenge is doing the right implementation, which the Jhacks team has always aimed for.

But of course we cannot avoid some hiccups along the way. We just have to fix it.

LMAO!!

A 6 page thread! (and many pages more in other forums)

Here's the summary in a paragraph or so
Orsitio makes a bridge but gets stuck on a Joomla 1.5 issue.
Asks for help, is ignored for 3 months or more.
Snubbed, he returns to his friendly site and posts "NO BRIDGE FOR Joomla 1.5" hinting it may be better to migrate to Mambo.
Alarmed, Joomla people are outraged at "the bastard" and a possible pendulum swing away from the money making machine Joomla.
SMF Fans (fanatics?) flame Joomla for their perfidy. Joomla mods delete posts/threads, ban people and go to SMF forum.
After the flames and counter flames (with assfix leading the way Tongue) Jinx et al finaly squeeze out of Ortiso a technical description of his problem which is responded to with a technical description of a fix.
With a small amount of chagrin (and much smaller apology) Orsitio remarks that there MAY be a bridge after all <blush>
Assfix offers to "Bury the Hatchet"* (hopefully not in Ostios back this time) and all are happy!!

<insert blah blah here>
* of course, the post "he finally got around to saying what his problem was" may be viewed as a last little stab or twist of a knife, but it's over!

The hissy fit is over and official SMF and official Joomla rejoin their shaky alliance!
