After removing and reinstalling the CB SMF plugin because of my other error, I now get this when updating a profile:

you need to check the RC2 thread, I believe a post is made about how to resolve this.  It is fixed in RC3.

you should check the faq in the jsmf user guide.  Are you trying to update your username?

then it is the bug with the cb plugin and you should have searched before posting a duplicate thread

took me 15 seconds to find the thread by searching

yes, agreed, problem was mine, I thought I had downloaded and installed RC3 so ignored the post even though version number on my install was displaying as RC2

as latest keeps displaying as RC2 (see below) I thought I was OK

Version Information:
Your Joomla version is: 1.0.11
Your SMF version is: 1.1 RC3
Your Joomla-SMF version: 2.0 RC3
Latest Joomla-SMF version: 2.0RC2

once again apologies - for some reason got my versions mixed up - everything is working just great
