How do I get a non-live site?
« on: November 15, 2006, 03:24:37 PM »

I'm just reading some other forums here and there is talk that when trying things out not to use it a live site, of if you're installing something, don't have it go live until it's ready.

How does one get a non-live site to make sure something works before making it goes live. So far all my trial and errors have been very public to my visitors.

you can make your site offline or you can have a separate but identical site, dev.yoursite.com.  Or you can do it locally by installing your own webserver using a tool like XAMPP.

Thanks for the quick reply. Maybe I should just take my site offline. Right now the site is 11 gigs in size.
Perhaps when I get my current issues sorted I'll see what and how XAMPP works.

for a standalone server, i recommend Joomla Standalone Server (JSAS) from www.joomlasolutions.com. Why? Because it's idiot-proof for people like us Tongue Just install, click a button, and it's ready to use.
