Patching Index & Sources.php

I've installed-
Version Information:
Your Joomla version is: 1.0.11
Your SMF version is: 1.1 RC3
Your Joomla-SMF version: 2.0 RC1
Latest Joomla-SMF version: 1.1.4.2
As I'm patching tryying to get it work in the 'Install' Page, I get:

Failed: Permission problem, unable to open file: /home/<my secret username!>/public_html/index/index.php
What do I do?

use the packaged joomla 1.0.11 index after making a backup of the current index.
