SMF user registration not linking to Joomla/CB
« on: September 11, 2007, 05:54:27 AM »

Hi, I wonder if you can help me...

I've installed Joomla/CB and JSMF on my existing SMF database and managed to get the 400 or so users migrated such that they are visible in the User Manager.  Login via the CB module does not recognize the migrated users.

If I create a new user on the Joomla/CB side, (CB login module) it works fine - the login on either Joomla/CB or SMF works and everything looks correct.  However, if I register a new user on the SMF side, it doesn't allow me to login from the Joomla/CB side.

Version Information:
Joomla/Mambo Version 1.0.13
SMF Version 1.1.3
Joomla-SMF Forum Integration Version 2.0.2

Configuration Information:
Community Builder 1.1.0
mod_dblogin
mod_comprofilerModerator
mod_comprofilerOnline
cb_plug_smf 2.0.3
cb_plug_smfprofile 2.1.1

Any suggestions short of trying a whole new build?

Thanks in advance,
Will

Gee... thanks for the overwhelming support info.

Can anybody tell me if migragating users from an existing forum ever works?

Wow... I even get smited for my efforts.  Nice group you have here.   Tongue

That's OK, I'll post what I've learned for the benefit of the community anyway.

After exhaustive work, I've determined the passwords do not migrate from users who are registered with SMF before the bridge is installed.  With everything installed properly (including the hidden update for 2.0.2.1 and the Joomla index.php patch), smf.class.php fails with unknown variable errors related to the password, as in this post.

Notice: Undefined variable: mos in /home/myhome/www/components/com_smf/smf.class.php on line 875
[included here for the benefit of anybody else who finds this buried in the forum by searching]

The work around is to force the users to reset their passwords, either by the e-mail authentication or by using the secret question/answer method.

Apparently, the salt that SMF uses in the md5 hash prevents the passwords from being migrated properly.  It would have been nice to have that information 20 hour of work ago... but hopefully this post will save somebody else that 20 hours.

Did anybody ever mention that a forum is a terrible way to build a knowledge base?  Just try following this advice and see what I mean.

Ever think of using a wiki?  Now I'll probably get smited again by that same jerk...    Roll Eyes
