Need help configuring SMF
« on: August 13, 2006, 11:08:11 AM »

I'm sure this must be a simple thing but I'm just lost.  I'm trying to install SMF version 1142 on Joomla 1.010.  I've tried to follow the READ ME instructions carefully but can't confgure SMF no matter how I try.  I upload SMF the file and it installs fine.  I then go to configure it and can't get past the first page.

Hitting SAVE with the defaults still leaves errors on the SMF Absolute path and SMF table prefix.  I add "forum" to the Absolute path to form:

/home/fanau3/public_html/brevardtours/forum

... and that still leaves me an error.  I've checked through all of the directories on the site and can't seem to find anything that looks correct.

I've left the SMF table prefix shows as it was:

smf_

The database I'm using is and SQL database named fanau3_bt01

I could really use some help.  I'm sure this is way into the "newbie" category but I am quite stuck.  I didn't find anything in the forum that seemed to answer this either.

**What error did you get?

**Did you put your smf installation in the directory named "forum", and that directory is under your Joomla folder?

**Is your smf database same with the joomla database?

I used the upload and install option.  When I got the errors, I unzipped the files and copied them to a folder on the server I created called "folder" (/home/fanau3/public_html/folder) and tried to use that directory but still got the same error.

Do I have to create a smf database separately from the Joomla database?  I thought they used the same database.

EDIT:  I figured it out.  Bad install of SMF

They should work in the same database.

Is SMF functioning correctly on its own?

It was an issue with the SMF install.  Got past that problem.  Your response got me on the right track.

Thank you.

Maybe someone knows this one.  The bridge seems to work fine so far, but when you click the forum button and go SMF, the top of the page gives the error:

"Notice: Constant WIRELESS already defined in /home/fanau3/public_html/forum/index.php on line 78"

... and the formatting of the board spills over beyond the template borders.  The font formatting and the like also look all whacked.

To see the real thing, go to FanAudio.com and click the forum link and you can see what I mean.

I'm not a PHP programmer but a true newbie other than running a PHPBB2 board for a few years.

Any help on where to go to study up on how to get this fixed ... or what I could do?

Thanks in advance.

either your php configuration or your joomla configuration is set to report notices(which are not errors).  You can adjust this for Joomla in the server tab of the global configurations by changing error reporting setting.  If that does not work your php configuration might need to be changed.

I shut off error reporting in Joomla and it didn't have any affect.  I ended up doing a workaround by unpublishing the bridge link on the main menu and creating a new one that has the forum open up in a new browser.  Works pretty well now.

I really appreciate your help with this.  SMF seems like a really good forum software.
