I read somewhere if installation of this module fails to report it , here it is:

extract the component from the zip first, the file you should upload is com_joomla_smf_forum_1_1_02.zip

got a problem with my recent post mod

Error fetching Recent Topics: 1064 You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near ') LEFT JOIN smf_log_mark_read AS lmr ON (lmr.ID_BOARD = b.ID_BOARD ' at line 8


how can that be fix?

For what it is worth after all those years: I added
require('/path_to_forum_dir/SSI.php');
just before
global $database, $context, $txt, $settings, $user_info, $mosConfig_sef, $modSettings;
in mod_smf_recent_topics.php. That solved it for me.
