I currently am trying to integrate the SMF forums into my site, and despite following the guide and replacing smf.class.php with the one given I still receive the following errors when attempting to patch:
Failed: /home2/******/public_html/joomla/index.php file or the parent path is not writeable!
Failed: /home2/******/public_html/smf/index.php file or the parent path is not writeable!
Both files are CHMOD 777 as well as their trailing directorys and still nothing. I do have SEO active as well as 404SEFx and both are working fine.
Joomla! is also in a subdirectory right now however once we move to our new server it will be in root. Everything else during installation checked out normal.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

hello i've the same problem with a new install joomla 1.0.9, smf 1.1RC2 and Joomla-SMF_1.1.02
I think I've located the source of my problem. As I stated in an earlier post, Fantastico was used to install SMF, and I don't think I redirected the database into the existing Joomla--mostly because I didn't know how--and still don't.
So brace yourself for a couple of n00b questions:
If I've got two different databases instead of the single database that is recommended, how do I merge those databases?
OR
If I need to do this on SMF install, can I still use Fantastico or should I do a direct download of SMF?
AND
At what point do I point my finger at the monitor and say GO INTO THE JOOMLA DATABASE. (ha ha) Seriously, where's that command/choice in the process?
