Can't Patch

I've been attempting to get the bridge component working for a while now; at the moment, if I click "Click to patch" on either Joomla or SMF source files, I get booted out of the admin section and have to log back in, with no change to the patch. I've gotten a friend to try it, and he managed to patch the Joomla part, but now he's stuck on the SMF one, with an error message of:

/home/bcedkea8/public_html/theforum/index.php

I've already changed permissions of the index file to allow access, but it still doesn't work.

I am having the same problem...getting message that says:

set the permissions to 777 and then try again.

i had mine set to 777 and it still tells me its not writeable... i dont understand why its not working, i installed it on another site i done and it worked perfect. can anyone help?
