I think both are good forum software and are both widely supported by communities. So, I guess your decision would only be based om which component integrates the forum to mambo flawlessly.

I'm gonna download this SMF and SMF-Bridge and see how it is. By the look of this forum, it seems pretty well integrated.

I have not personally tried installing phpBB component. For what I heard, SEF is not implemented so I kept my hands off.

And I think phpBB sources are pretty much modified and ported to as component. So how about if phpBB releases a new update? This means you are stuck with the ported source to the mambo component.

On the other hand, the SMF way only modified 4 SMF files. And you can easily install and uninstall it using the Package Manager.

So at least in using SMF, it's still a stand alone software. It is not ported, it is wrapped in a component. And that's what I like about it!
