paths to forums
« on: February 28, 2006, 02:56:42 PM »

i just recently installed joomla on my web site.
i installed joomla-smf 1.1 on my site but i am confused on the paths.

it keeps saying incorrect path. so i was wondering if someone could help me get that filled in better.

this is what it says in the config section of the forum.

 url path is: http://mysiteurl.com/directory/index.php?option=com_smf&Itemid=29&
absolute path is /www/m/mysiteurlcom/htdocs/directory//<SMF path here>

i have taken out my actual domain name for security reasons.

but anyhows i have replaced where is says <smf path here> with the path to the smf.php in com_smf folder inside the componet folder. so the path i tried looked something like this:

/www/m/mysiteurl/htdocs/directory/components/com_smf/smf.php

i have also tried it with two slashes after directory. but it alwasy say incorrect path.

so what path am i supposed to be using may i ask?

It's not the component folder path, it's the path to your actual SMF installation.

So if your SMF is installed in a subdirectory called 'forum' of your home directory (which in this example is called 'directory'), you would use /www/m/mysiteurlcom/htdocs/directory/forum

Make sense?

You absolute is different to your site url

the path should look something like this.

home/myusername/public_html/forum

if you having trouble finding it try looking in the address bar of your FTP program that you used to upload the SMF files into the forum folder.

Remember to not add a slash after /forum

ok now i am really confused here.

first off i do understand about the absolute path. on my server the path is:

/www/m/mysitecom/htdocs/directory/

that will lead into the folder that joomla is installed at.

so i guess my question is, just where is this forum folder supposed to be?
there is no forum folder anywhere in my folders.

i did exactly what the instructions told me to do. but i am lost on the absolute path.

for if the forum address is not that of the one inside the components folder. called com_smf.
then just where is it?Huh

Ok let's keep things simple here Smiley
-components/com_smf is NOT the path to your forums. It is, in fact, the path to the Joomla-SMF bridge component. In your case, this is of no import and you can ignore it totally Smiley
-You mentioned your root path is "/www/m/mysitecom/htdocs" and that you installed your site in a directory you named "directoy", therefore I'll assume you did not install joomla in your root directory (which, of course, is /www/m/mysitecom/htdocs) In your case, the "SMF Absolute Path" setting in your configuration should be "/www/m/mysitecom/htdocs/directory/forums".
-In this case, directory is the path you installed your site (which is basically where you installed Joomla), andforums is the folder in which you installed SMF.
-If you're still confused about what is your true names for directory and forums, inside directory you will find the files configuration.php, index.php, index2.php and globals.php (amidst other files), and inside forums, you will find the files settings.php and SSI.php (amidst other files). when you're certain you've found the right folders, substitute the names of those 2 folders into "/www/m/mysitecom/htdocs/directory/forums"
-In the future, it might be a good idea to give the real names of your folders, which will make it easier for both yourself and anyone who's going to help Smiley

well ok got that part figured out.

the problem was that i was thinking the joomla-smf was the forums.
i installed smf and then ran the patch and now i have forums on my site. and the absolute path worked.

 however.

the whole reason i did all this was to make it to where members of my site would not have to sign in twice. as in once for main site, and then again when they go to the forums.
i was under the impression that this is exactly what joomla-smf was for.
but if so it didn't work.
both joomla and smf is on same database, and the prefix was jos_ for both.

however, the members for joomla are on jos_users, and the members list for smf is on smf_members.

i changed the smf_ to jos_ on the configuration before saving, i also pathed both source files then Synchronized joomla and smf users. but it is still asking that i sign in twice.

 any suggestions?

Ok I think you've got some fundamentals wrong..
This is what you do:
-Download Mod Joomla-SMF Login 1.4 if you havent and install it (it's a module available here)
-Go to your modules list and enable this new module. disable the default joomla one
-Leave all your joomla tables with the prefix jos_
-Change all your smf tables BACK to smf_
-Using an ftp client, chmod all the needed files and the folders they're in to 777. The list of files and folders is in your Joomla-SMF Forum components configuration page, under the Permissions tab
-set your SMF Absolute Path accordingly (refer to previous post)
-set SMF Database Prefix to smf_ (this is why you should leave your smf tables with the prefix smf_ and not change them!)
-Click the Save button at the top right FIRST (this may cause some confusion. If you do not click save first BEFORE you try to patch the files, the changes you made to SMF Absolute Path and SMF Database Prefix will be NOT be saved, the "error" will remain, and you may think something is wrong)
-Patch Joomla Source Files
-Patch SMF Source Files
-Synchronize Joomla and SMF users
-Click save again

There is supposed to be a jos_users AND a smf_members. Part of the responsibility of the bridge is to synchronize the data inside this 2 tables together (it also gives you the option of using either joomla or smf's interface for registration). And yes, if you get it right, your users will only need to login once (using the login module you downloaded here) Smiley

Hope this helps.

Mike has way more patience than I do.  Please also refer to the readme file, it seems you may have skipped... reading it.  Lips Sealed

well i duuno here. patiants? i am starting to lose mine on this.

i did read the read me, but mistook what it said to do.

so now, i wiped everything out. i am just getting things into place so it not that bad of a set back and though it might be good to start fresh with it all.

so now, i did as was suggested.

ok but i use powweb and powweb has on it's server auto install for these scripts. which kind of helps me out.

 so anyhows,

 i installed jommla.
 then i installed smf.

then i went into the admin part of joomla, and installed the joomla-smf
ok i got the login module this time too. which i didn't know about before.

ok so this time i left the smf_ prefix as it was.
i clicked save.
then entered the absolute path, clicked save again
then patch joomla's source files,
then patched smf source files,
synced the two users, and clicked save.

all seem to go ok here. until......

 i tried to log on.

it keeps insisting my password is wrong.
i even tried registering with a new name to test the log in, but that didn't work either it still says wrong password. i tried using forgot e-mail. but problem with that is i can't get into my adminstrator section of board to set e-mail settings.

when i was required to log in twice once for site, once for boards, all was ok with name and password, but once i patched them to sync the users, my password somehow became wrong.
and funny thing is used same password for both when installing.

so i don't know what is wrong here.

actually thought it was gonna work, until it didn't. Roll Eyes

anyhows any suggestions on how to fix this would be much appriciated.

oh yeah and almost forgot. it keeps redirecting me to the foums after i try to log on, even though i have that option set to no in configuration. don't know if that is because it not logging me in correctly or what??

go into joomla admin and create a new user.  The login from the login module.  Does that fail as well?

or register a new user, go to the joomla backend and change the user to Super Administrator, then go to SMF admin, and give that user administrator status, then delete the default admin user.

As much as possible, try not to use 3rd party installation scripts as it may complicate things..happened to me before when i tried installing joomla using fantastico Smiley

ps: just a note: did you disable the default joomla login module, and ENABLE the new smf login module (mod_smf_login)?

ok got it working finally, i think it was that i was using my web host's auto install scripts as mentioned for i installed smf manually and all went the way it should.

when i was using the auto install feature i put both joomla and smf on same database. but the auto installer was creating two user names for it and i think this is where the problem was coming in at.

for now i only have one user name for the database and it worked like a charm without a hitch.

thanks for the help all it is muchly appriciated. Cheesy

I think I'm having the same kind of problem. Everyone says the absolute path should be ...blah/forums. Except when I installed smf it never installed a folder or path named forums so it says it is incorrect. How did you fix it?

Thanks
