New Joomla-SMF Configuration Problems

I upgraded my site to Joomla 1.0.8 yesterday.  When attempting to unpatch (prior to repatching) the SMF Source Files in the Joomla-SMF configuration component I get this message:

"Failed: /home/userid/public_html/joomla_site/ncvForums/index.php file or the parent path is not writeable!"

But the paths and files are clearly writeable (as reported by Joomla!Xplorer and FileZilla).

Furthermore, I must manually synchronize users now using the Joomla-SMF configuration component.

Any idea how to resolve these issues?

Well, I'm evidently not having the synchronization problems anymore.  Without telling me beforehand a friend of mine went to my not-quite-open-yet Joomla site, successfully registered via the Joomlahacks bridge, received his confirmation e-mail as hoped, and went on to post some messages on the SMF forum at the site.  Cool!
 
I still get the error message on the configuration component screen.  But who cares?  It works!!
