Registration + profile

Hey everyone

I'm new to Joomla, SMF, and JoomlaHacks.. but I've learned a lot in the past month that I've had it on my site. Basically what I am looking for is a way to add fields to the Joomla registration page which will reflect onto the SMF profile page. For example:

New user signs up. Normally they're given the following fields:
Name
Username
email
Pass
Verify Password

and then they go to the SMF forum and modify their profile.

What I want, is that on the registration page it will have some of those fields. Example:
Name
Username
Email
Birthdate
Personal Text
etc etc

And whenever the user signs on after registering with that information, it is already filled in on the SMF profile.

How hard would this be to implement, and am I even asking in the right place? lol. I'm also a member of the SMF boards @ simplemachines, so if thats where I have to go thats fine with me. I have some C++ & java knowledge, so I know my way around PHP -- just not MySQL. Thanks!
