installation error

I could not install the latest version of Simple Machines - JoomlaSMFForum_1.0.2/

When trying to install JoomlaSMFForum_1.0.2/ I received the following error message:

ERROR: Could not find an XML setup file in the package.

I have Joomla version 1.0.7 stable. Can someone please advise what I can do?

Also how do I maintain my forum subscribers and plug them into Simple Machines when and if I can get the component installed?

I'm currently using Joomlaboard and of course want to maintain current posts and subscribers.

the zip contains the installable zip, extract Joomla<version>.zip and inside you will find com_joomla_smf_forum_<version>.zip which is the file used for component installation.

Thanks for this. It explains why I'm having trouble with other components I'm trying to install.

How do you know which packages need unzipping and which don't?

components usually have the prefix com_ and modules mod_ and mambots mos_

that's prolly the best way to tell. But look for the readme file and then see what it says, most packages have a readme to explain what needs to be done.
