Hope I'm not too late....but I was having the same problem too, with Joomla 1.0.7. I found a quick fix here:

Go to the configuration.php file & search for "hideAuthor"
You should come across a line that looks something like this:
$mosConfig_hideAuthor = '0';

Just change that 0 to a 1 and you should be in business.

There are also some other variables like createdate and modifydate that you can turn off as well.
