Can someone tell me if it actually possible to have Joomla 1.0.4 work ok with Joomla SMF Forum? I noticed the joomlahacks website posted a news item stating that it's awaiting testing.

What would you suggest I do now that I have Joomla 1.0.4 installed in terms of starting afresh. I have 200+ users and would prefer not to redo that if possible. And there are already quite a few posts.

Would a fresh install of the bridge work?

There have been several reports identical to this one, both in SMF and in Joomla.  The bridge is trying to sync the session tables, joomla and smf have separate ones, and I think there is some improvement that can be done there.  What you can try is the following

• Clear clientside cookies for your site
• In SMF administration->Disable local storage of cookies
• In SMF administration->Disable subdomain independent cookies
• Verify that the SMF forum link in joomlasmf bridge configuration is identical to the live site configuration(and identical in SMF administration)
  
  • i.e. make sure both say www.yoursite.com and not one with www.yoursite.com and the other yoursite.com

If all that doesn't help use phpmyadmin to delete all the sessions in jos_session and smf_sessions.

Let us know if that works.
