1  Joomla Hacks / Joomla-SMF 2.0.x / Re: Is it possible to run the SMF installation on a sub-domain? on: December 21, 2006, 12:00:52 AM
I started looking at the SEF and was kind of dismayed by how they were implemented.  Although I don't claim to know the first thing about some of this, many stored every single page url in the db and as the page loaded it queried the db many, many times.  At least, that is the brief impression I got.  Imagine all the links on any given forum page... just the board listing is over a hundred generally.  I can't imagine a hundred queries to the db to load a single page.

Not that I have a better solution... and I may have misunderstood some of the code when I reviewed the SEF system, but that was my impression.

This what has me confused Wolverine.

Before I began using Joomla or SMF, I used other forum softwares and basic HTML or PHP files for my website.

To do a re-write of a URL with those websites, you simply make a re-write rule in your HTaccess file.
I do not understand why we cannot do that with Joomla, and why components need to be installed instead.  Huh
For instance, even just a simple rewrite that renamed the /option,com_smf/ part of the URL to a user designated name (like /joomlahacksforum/ for instance) would be ideal would it not?
Why can that not be done with a mod_rewrite? Or can it?
I don't know much about mod_rewrite so I guess somebody else might be able to explain.

Yeh, it's a difficult one isn't it?
Both OpenSEF and ArstioSEF seem to have abandoned their support forums entirely. Legitimate questions have been left unanswered for weeks, so I am loathe to install either component incase something goes wrong.

I think most people would agree that having the word Forum in the URL is excellent for SEO. I wouldn't even mind if the word forum appeared as a folder rather than a sub domain i.e. mydomain.com/forum.

Anything's better than component/option,com_smf etc.

I think we need a SEF component that works and is supported by it's developers!  Wink

Hi Wolverine,
I took the time to post a review about your bridge. It's the least i can do after all the hard work you have put in.
Do you know how long it takes from submitting the review to seeing it published?

Hi Wolverine,

My domain is hairdressingworld.com

I wanted to run the forum from a subdomain named forum.hairdressingworld.com.

The reason for this is so that every URL from the forum contains the word "forum" in the URL. Currently of course, it doesn't. I want to do this purely for SEO purposes.

I am assuming that the path would be the same seeing as the forum would remain in the same folder of the same server? Perhaps somebody can shed some light on this?

Cheers.
6  Joomla Hacks / Joomla-SMF 2.0.x / Quote button does not seem to be working on: December 18, 2006, 01:08:32 AM
EDIT: The quote button works if you put the redirect code into the correct php file!

7  Joomla Hacks / Joomla-SMF 2.0.x / Is it possible to run the SMF installation on a sub-domain? on: December 16, 2006, 10:28:41 AM
Hi,
After running my Joomla and SMF installation wrapped using the bridge for a little while now, I was wondering if it's possible to run the forum on a subdomain?
I already have my forum installed in a folder inside my root, so setting up a sub-domain pointing to it shouldn't be a problem, but would the bridge still work?

The only reason I am interested in running the forum from a sub domain is so that I can use the word forum for SEO purposes.

Thanks very much.
8  Joomla Hacks / Joomla-SMF 2.0.x / Help with this: \n\t\t\n\t appearing on my forum page on: December 11, 2006, 07:38:35 PM
Hi Guys,
I have noticed a strange problem since installing the bridge.

In the top left hand corner of my page (directly after the <body> tag in the source) I have this \n\t\t\n\t appear on my page. It's being created dynamically from somewhere but I haven't a clue where.

Do you have any idea what could be causing it? I am running my SMF forum wrapped in Joomla 1.0.11. I have also installed the discussbot and CB plug in.

Thanks for any advice you are able to give.

Chris.

EDIT: It's gone now  Huh

Thank you so much Wolverine! You are correct. I manually edited out the headers because otherwise I ended up with double headers on every forum page!

I'll get onto this now!

10  Joomla Addon Discussion / Joomla Mambots / Anyway to shorten the article before it get's pasted? on: December 11, 2006, 05:18:34 PM
Hi guys, I've installed the discussbot and was wondering if there is anyway to prevent the entire article being posted in SMF?

I have set the "Article characters quoted:" to 50, but the entire article gets posted. With long articles this can be difficult.

Also, while I'm on, is there anyway to do the following...I'd like to be able to have the comments link available at the end of the intro if viewed in blog format or at the end of the article if viewed in full page, like most of the other comment bots.

And finally, is there a way to set the comment bot to automatically allow comments only on certain sections of content? I have an entire section of content named "Articles", and with "allow comments on all content" I obviously get comments on everything, but when I switch it off, I have to go through each content page in my articles section and post the discussbot code. It's taking me ages. With most comment systems you can apply the comment bot to only show up for certain sections. Are there any plans to do that with SMF discussbot?

Cheers,
Chris.

smilies?  I am speaking specifically about the unable to load main template error.  The smilies and AJAX work just fine.

Hi Wolverine, on my board the smilies no longer work. You can see them and click them but the code does not insert (or for bold, italics etc.)

That's what I was asking about. When I reset the SMF template to the Core template they work, but when I go back to the Orange-lt template they only work for a short while before they stop working again.
Do you know what would cause this problem?

Thanks.

I have tried to identify this problem many times with no success.  My suggestion is to make whatever change in standalone mode.
What about the smilies Wolverine? Can you tell me which SMF files are changed during the patching process as I think I may have to update my template files manually.

Thanks.

I've just discovered something else. When I try to later anything in the admin center of my forum I get the following error:

An Error Has Occurred!
Unable to load the 'main' template.

Perhaps that has something to do with it?

Hi Wolverine,
My problem keeps returning with the smiley problem.

I have to change to the core theme then back again in order to get them working. Do you have any idea why this would happen? Is it because I'm using a different theme?

Which files get modified when SMF gets patched by the bridge? I'm thinking I may have to manually patch some of my theme templates.

Thanks for any help you can give.

An Update:
The BBC buttons and javascripts are now working! Yey.

Here is what I did (might help others reading this thread in future).

I went into my admin panel of my SMF forum, went to themes and settings and set the overall theme as SMF Core theme (the default one used on the SMF site).

I then checked my BBC codes and smilies etc. and they were working.  Huh

So I quickly changed the overall theme back again (I use Orange.lt as my overall theme) and found that the smilies etc. are now all working.

If this does the trick for anyone with the same problem, please reply to this thread so that we can put this into the FAQ.

Thanks to Mike for his help though.
