1  Joomla Addon Discussion / Joomla Modules / Re: Recent Topics Module Disliked by Users on: September 17, 2007, 07:38:17 AM
Hmm... I also do not have problem described in ITEM 1. When someone Reply to topic it is shown first in this module.
Dmitry, when some replies to a topic, does the module also show the New icon or otherwise indicate there is a new post there?

I'm beginning to wonder if there is not some other issue related to the module on my site.

What version of the module are you using? I'm using 2.02, (I think), and have no such problems. See my site: http://www.TianjinExpats.com for an example. You can see clearly that the module is updating like you say you want it to.

Actually, I took a look at this because the biggest complaint my users have is  that the module scrolls too quickly, (already set a scroll speed of 1), and was wondering if anyone else knew of a way to slow it down even more?
I'm also using v.2.0.2 and as far as I know, it is the same that was released back in February. I'm not using the scrolling. I don't know if that makes a difference or not. What about others? Is this module regularly listing the latest topic that has been posted in at the top of the list. Is it regular indicating with a "New" icon that even older topics you may have previously read have new posts in them? Bear in mind, I'm not talking about it just sticking new topics up there when they are created. Anyway, I would like to hear from others on this.

BTW, nice work on the site there NateM and thanks for chirping in on this.

3  Joomla Addon Discussion / Joomla Modules / Recent Topics Module Disliked by Users on: September 16, 2007, 03:55:37 PM
I apologize if the particular things I discuss here with regard to the Recent Topics module has discussed elsewhere in the forums here. I've searched around and found quite a number of threads on the module, but none I found brought up the matters I wish to discuss in this thread. I also hope that you folks will consider this post as useful feedback if nothing else. That is the spirit with which is intended.

I run a website called CelticsBlog with currently a little over 3,400 members that is very active. During slow activity periods we may have around 150 to 200 people on the site. During busy periods we may have 2,500 there. I migrated our old site to Joomla and SMF at the beginning of the year. The JSMF bridge, modules and plugins have served us very well there. Our members enjoy the nice integration of the site with the forums and most of the JSMF functionality with one exception. Practically person on the site, both members and visitors dislike the Recent Topics module. There are two main complaints.

Complaint #1:
I hear this from practically everyone -- The only time a topic gets listed in the module is when it is first created. After that it just gets pushed down and off of the list, quickly and completely, never to return. This irritates people to no end for two reasons: 1) They miss a lot of new topics that are created and, 2) to the last person, they are way more interested in the topics that have recently been posted in (whether new or old) than they are in just topics that have recently been created.

What they want to see is that a topic gets re-listed at the top of the topic list every time a new post is made to it. If the module did that, then it would produce a list of most recent topics that have been posted in and that would naturally include new topics as well as active, newly posted ones.

Complaint #2:
Again, I hear this from practically everyone -- The only time a "New" icon shows up on a topic listed is when it is first created and is as of yet unvisited. After a topic has been visited, it never again shows a New icon no matter how many posts are being made in it. As far as most people seem to be concerned, that makes diminishes the function of the New icon almost to be useless.

Here's what they tell me they want from the module:
They want a Recent Topics module that will list the most recently posted in topics in order from the latest to the least whether the topics are new or old and they want the module to indicate with the New icon which topics in that list contain posts they've not yet read.

Summary:
It seems to me that they want is more like what the what the SMF SSI Recent Topics Function: (<?php ssi_recentTopics(); ?>) provides, but with a display better suited for use in a module and of course, more backend control over the parameters. I must say, I agree with them that this would probably be a much better module. As I mentioned earlier, I'm just providing you with some feedback.

Aside from what I've mentioned above, the only other thing that has ever been asked of me is for backend control over which categories/boards are displayed. That of course has been discussed elsewhere in these forums and I'm not so worried about that issue anyway. It would be nice to have, but I can pretty easily hack the module to control which boards show there.
4  Joomla Hacks / Joomla-SMF 2.0.x / User syncing error: 414 URI Too Large on: June 20, 2007, 06:12:17 PM
I have a website with around 2,500 members. Any time I try to sync realnames or usernames via the JSMF component, I get a 414 Error page...

     Request-URI Too Large
The requested URL's length exceeds the capacity limit for this server.

     request failed: URI too long

     Apache/1.3.37 Server at simplyadvanced.biz Port 80

I looked around for some info on this here, but didn't find any. Has anyone else experienced this issue and/or there some resolutions for it?

I still have the "Undefined index: templatestyle"  template error in the forum logs if anyone can help me squash that error...

It just fills up the logs rather quickly...
Thanks..

Josh

Yeah, I'm getting anywhere from 6,000 to 10,000 such errors a day on my site, depending upon our traffic levels.

I can verify the "8: Undefined index: templatestyle" problem with the RocketTheme SMF Versatility2 theme. In my case, the theme is being used in wrapped mode with Joomla! 1.0.12, SMF 1.1.1 and JSMF 2.0. The problem occurs with both guests and logged in members. I can't tell what browsers/platforms they are using or if that is even an factor in this situation. The issue certainly loads up the forum error log in a very short matter of time.

The error seems to occur for every instance of $context['templatestyle'] in Display.template.php. Those are located on lines 661, 663, 667, 669, 672 and 673. That area of code correlates to the button array that deals with the contextual handling of the reply, notify, mark unread, add poll, send topic and print buttons and functions.

I don't know what "undefined index" is being referred to.
