You need to have smf and Joomla in same db. Best to setup Joomla first - then install SMF telling it to use same DB as Joomla. You can use same ID and password for DB. Once you determine both Joomla and SMF work normally follow the Joomlahacks Setup instructions. Do NOT skip any steps! Good luck.

Check your PHP error_log Good clues will be in there. Might need to ask your host where it lives for your site.

Attach your "patched" index.php file so we can see the update. The patch also creates a backup of your index.php which allows it to unpatch the file but keep in mind if you did Joomla! updates since your patched...this "patched" file might have been overwritten by the update.

I have tried some of the other "fixes" for this but it still errors in "wrapped" mode. 8: Trying to get property of non-object File: /var/www/vhosts/mysitexxx.com/httpdocs/components/com_smf/smf.class.php Line: 272 Is this still an open issue?

After reviewing the section of script a bit closer all those bits are doing is making the resulting JS script output more readable. You only want to edit that function moreSmileys java script code. I did edit all combinations of \n and \t within that function and it cleaned up the \n\t stray output.
