I Click Upload&Install and i get this error.. :  Upload component - Upload Failed
ERROR: Could not find an XML setup file in the package.

Please somebody help me.. (xml file is in the folder)

unzip the file first

PS. use version 1.1.4.2 (http://www.joomlahacks.com/component/option,com_smf/Itemid,94/topic,1958.0) instead

Geo,
Click on that link in my post, it has the latest j-smf release (1.1.4.2)

download that, and unzip it. yes, you are on the right track.. you should point your joomla installer to com_joomla_smf...1_1_4_2.zip!

I got the same error.. I tried to install it through a directory, so i got this error :

Failed to create directory "/home/karvouna/public_html/portal/components/com_smf/backup"

I tried to modify the permissions but it says that i have not access

Yes, make sure the following directories are writeable:

yes they are normally writable.. (i changed them before the installation..) The problem is when the installer makes a new folder, it doesn't give the normal permissions

There is an option the Safe mode patch (is not working for all installation). Or get an other hosting provider. Or build your site local on your machine @ home and upload it when it is ready ;)

You can find the Safe mode patch here (the site is Dutch, and the patch is only for members) Sorry for that
Download link Safe Mode patch (http://superdaantje.nl/component/option,com_docman/task,cat_view/gid,33/Itemid,10/)

This is discussed several times on the forums. When the patch is not working just ask your hosting provider ;)
