Hi!

It says in documentation that SEF URLs should be turned off in SMF settings and use Joomla SEF instead. Unfortunately, when using 3rd party SEF component forum simply won't run in wrapped mode. Besides that, we would probably go for unwrapped mode anyway and Joomla SEF has nothing to do with forum links then.

Is it safe to turn on SMF SEF when in unwrapped mode?

No, the urls in unwrapped are still very much Joomla urls. There are a few discussions about SEF and a user is currently testing OpenSEF for JSMF. Search the forums for more info.
