A great colleauge of mine David Grills of http://www.sunspotinteractive.com has discovered the following about the installation order of the two Mambo components. Here is the text of his message:

I have installed mambo 4.5.2.2 to http://www.sunspotinteractive.com/xxxx

I have also installed SMF 104 and the mambo-smf component.

Mambelfish is also installed.

Everything is working great, but there is a conflict between mambelfish and the mambo-smf component. Both components modify index.php. The order is what is important as mambelfish will ruin the smf install but not the other way around.

It seems as though, for safety, that you should install the mambo-smf component into mambo LAST of all!
