KNOWN PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS
* After SMF registration SMF login fails o This is due to the fact that because of the way SMF handles variables we can't synchronize immediately. You must first login through a Joomla based login(JSMF login, CB login(with plugin), or default Joomla login) or login twice. Why twice? After the first failure we are able to trigger a synchronization event so the second login should succeed.
I have tried logging in thru every mode, i have tried the login screen on both the joomla side and the smf side, ive tried this with 3 drifferent names that preexisted, and 1 name that i regristered, after i began having this problem as a test
every result gave the the error messages you see above

the forum login "works" and delivers the username and pass to the given mail addresss, but the user is deemed to be unknow when he wants to login into the forum
well atleast im not alone in this but it seems no one knows how to fix it I was really looking to forum intergration, anyone know of another forum/bridge option?
I looked into another problem like this only to find out that the user hadn't moved the previous users from a previous, separate SMF database. I'll take a look at yours if you want to provide me a link.
I think I know why this is happening. When you synchronize you have the option of synchronizing usernames or realnames. In addition, there is an option in the configuration that can be set to username or realname sync which is for all new registrations. If you were to synchronize realnames and then set the option to usernames, this would cause all "old" users to fail login. The same is true if you synchronized usernames and then set the option to realnames.

All were fresh installs on a new server, there was only 2 regristered names on the smf side, and 3 names on the joomla side, at time of installing the bridge. only one name was the same on both.

ok, im not sure i completly understand this part, in the joomla-smf forum configuation i have the synchronization set to username, see below, your above reply makes me think there are 2 places i need to set the sync
after reading that post, i tried loggining in with both sync modes, same result
for all of the users that were regristered, they had the same username and real name, so i changed the real name of a couple to something else, and tried loggining in with it all again, as far as i can tell ive tried every combo i know of
ive also tried creating a newuser, so its not just an issue with old preexisting users :/ the site isnt ment to be public yet, so ill pm it to you
on the installation tab, if you click check sync it and there are users to sync it will display two links, one is sync usernames and the other is sync realnames. That is the other place.
On further thought I am not sure if this would cause a failure.
