Editing/Adding groups in Joomla

Hello All,

New user here, I recentley setup my first joomla install I had been using a different CMS for years and needed a change Wink

I have a question though. Is there any way to create your own groups in joomla or via an addon. Basically anyone can register on the site but I also run a small irc channel and I was hoping there is a way I can create a group for the channel users so they can access specific content that other registered users cant. Hope that makes sense im trying to type this out quick before i go to a meeting.
